HW 6 - Food Diary

My daily intake in calories would normally be 1500 around there but the most would be 2000 calories a day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle for myself. Yesterday i ate around 1550 calories at the least. I choose to eat those many calories because i want to maintain my weight i remember i used to weigh 244 pounds back in 10th grade and i now weigh at least 190 pounds since i exercise and etc.

Yesterday i woke up late around 12pm and skipped breakfast and ate a big lunch which was eggs and bacon(reduced fat bacon) with whole wheat bread and a cup of soy milk. Ill roughly estimate the amount of calories of maybe about 360 or so. That meal made me feel full and energized and kept me full until dinner time. At dinner time i had Chinese food which consisted of white rice and fried shrimp, which was probably roughly around 660 or so calories. Which made me really full and stuffed i only ate half the plate of food and gave the rest to my uncle. And then before bed i hate a homemade protein shake with a cup of fat free milk. Which would be another 240 calories. The protein shake completed my day of food and made me good for the rest of the night until i woke up the next day. (look on top of page of course to refer to the amount of calories and other nutritional facts about my protein shake at home). Overall what made me eat that things i ate that day was me trying to stay healthy overall and trying not to be like the average American which is overweight.

Today in the morning i ate and egg omelet with one slice of whole wheat bread and water which is 140 calories and 17 grams of protein. When i ate that meal for breakfast i got full fast and felt energized. It was a good feeling because most meals that people eat during the morning doesn't keep them full for long. My meal kept me full until at least 2:30pm. Then i ate lunch which was like a tuna sandwich with whole wheat bread and lettuce. 150 calories and 18g of protein. Which also made me feel full until dinner time which is when i had a chicken gyro and a protein shake(home-made protein shake) with an estimation of 670 calories and around 25 grams of protein. Overall those dishes made me feel less hungry through out the day and made me feel more energized. I decided to eat these foods because personally i like staying fit and making a nice eating habit instead of consuming McDonald's which contains like 1700 calories roughly for a meal which is the amount of calories you would gain throughout the day with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But as you can see i consumed less calories which from my three day course meal. A total intake of 860 calories and 60 grams of protein compared to a McDonald meal which contains roughly 1700 calories and tons of other nasty stuff that your body doesn't need to consume. http://www.weightlossforall.com/mcdonalds-calories-list.htm (McDonald's calorie list check it out you'll be surprised).

HW 5 - Dominant Discourses Regarding Contemporary Foodways in the U.S.

Obesity in America is probably the most likely talked topic because half of the Americans in the world today eat to much fast food and less exercise. Now and days you see on TV the fattest guy on earth weighing like 700 pounds who lies in bed all day and eats a whole two cheeseburgers, and a whole pack of twelve donuts, and then they worry about dying and then need surgery because they eat to much. America enforces kids to be active because of obesity but back in the 1990s which is when most of us were growing up they didn't have those kind of advertisements. They enforced it less twenty years ago but now they enforce it more to make sure kids live healthier. http://www.drkalsweightlosstips.com/obesity-in-america.html

Doctors, nutritiousness would of course get quoted if they are informing anybody about a certain thing that's going on. Like in Dr.Phil they was this overweight four year old who weighs 150 pounds. Or in any show or newspaper they would have a section talking about obesity, or a disease and there will be a doctor on the show explaining the symptoms of a certain disease, or if its about obesity they talk about ways to stop getting over eating, and weighs to exercise to lose the extra weight. And sometimes Americans will listen but then there will be ads on TV like Jenny Craig or like some magical medicine that will make you lose weight in about two weeks without exercising, and people will fall for it and buy it and then notice it does nothing, of course advertisements almost always have paid actors in order to persuade people on certain magically medicines for losing weight or to get a vaccine for the flu but they hardly ever mention the side effects after.http://www.drphil.com/slideshows/slideshow/1153/?id=1153&showID=121

If it wasn't for McDonald's or any other fast food place and if people were thought to eat healthier and knew what went into making these so called "delicious" foods, then maybe people would be eating fast food way less and people in America would be slimmer. Major problems in America will always require the right solution if its not obesity its a new disease or what not. Until people find out they have either diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a huge risk of having a heart attack then that's when people get scared and then they start to take action. People don't care about what they eating and if they get fat until they hear from their doctor or nutritiousness that they are in a risk of a ton of problems that will most likely cause them to die. People are afraid of the word death and when they know they're in risk of dying; that's when they take action after they know they pushed the certain limit.

HW 4 - Your Families' Foodways

The people in my household tend to eat less healthier things than I do. In the morning my breakfast could consist of two hard boiled eggs, whole wheat bread, and a protein shake. Where my mom for example eats fried eggs with bacon and juice. From that alone i guess you can basically assume who eats healthier and who tends to slack off a bit at times. What makes it worse is that my mom is a diabetic and she eats fatty foods from her home cooked meals which i refuse to eat at times.

When i asked my mother about the generational changes in the food we today and what she ate back then are different from the way we have it. Back then she told me that her mother used to cook everyday and they didn't have the luxury of eating out like us "kids" have it now. She stated that we have it easier and that we take the luxury's we have and don't really think about it, but if we lived back then when there wasn't a lot of eating out at fast food places everyday then they wouldn't really rely to much on fast food places as they do now.

A day ago i recently ate two who wheat sandwiches with a protein shake. And i ate that dinner by myself in my room in front of my TV away from my mom since she ate her home cooked food. And this differentiates my food ways from my family food way because instead of eating chicken cooked in oil and rice and beans i chose to eat healthier then what i usually eat or from what people in my family usually eat. But my food ways is way different than my mom since i eat healthier and my mother chooses to eat fattier foods.

HW 2 - Food - Initial Thoughts

Food is a natural thing that humans need in order to live but many Americans treat food like its a thing they need to abuse everyday which leads to obesity in tons of Americans today. A lot of fast food places like McDonald's, Wendy's and etc sell a lot of unhealthy food to people. But what makes people crave that food is the taste and not only that but also the advertisements on t.v that say; like Wendy's for example claims that they beef is never frozen and its fresh, rather than McDonald's which Wendy's claims is frozen and never fresh. And that's what makes people eat at a certain place based on taste and also what they see/hear on t.v or on newspapers.

For instance yeah i do eat fast foods once in a blue moon but not every single day like most Americans do because they find it faster to get. Like a grab and go food just in-case the person is in a rush. But typically i eat healthy like in the mornings my typical food would be 2 hard boiled eggs with whole wheat toast and a protein shake. Other Americans may go to McDonald's and pick up breakfast from there but if they compared the McDonald's calorie intake and money spent on breakfast at McDonald's or any other place they would see that they would possibly eat healthier at home and save at least 100 dollars a week. But since fast food taste better a lot more people rather eat there than to save their money and eat healthier at home.

When shopping time comes around which is once a month i do shopping i usually make a shopping list consisting of around 5 things like Soy milk, eggs, fat free milk, granola bars and of course water. I do my shopping whenever i need stuff or my mom will buy me my stuff when she does her regular food shopping. But to tell you the truth she buys so much junk food that the shopping cart is fulled with these foods that i never even touch and she's a diabetic and she eats junk still and so does my younger brother. Come dinner time i usually fix myself up a sandwich with a cup of soy milk(or water) and a granola bar on the side. My mom usually makes chicken with rice and beans i refuse to eat that though. Most and foremost I'm dependent when it comes to my eating habits and what i choose to eat on that particular day
